In Buddhism, wisdom and compassion always go hand in hand. Compassion is the sincere wish that all living beings may be free from suffering and its causes. To act in a truly beneficial way, wisdom is also necessary. Wisdom helps us not only to avoid acting solely on the basis of our initial reactions, habits, or emotions, but also to better understand what gives rise to suffering and what circumstances contribute to happiness and freedom. This practice can also profoundly influence our own lives; it can help us face whatever we encounter with greater clarity, serenity, and confidence, and to be less trapped by confusion, fear, or reflexive patterns. In doing so, it opens up a space that allows us to approach ourselves—as well as the people and other living beings around us—with greater understanding and compassion. Wisdom truly finds its full meaning when it is linked to compassion and directed toward the well-being of all.
